Motorsport Engineering Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship

This course is ideally suited for those working within a motorsport or engineering company. By training with Activate Apprenticeships you could train with one of a range of companies, from the large F1 employers to the smaller engineering suppliers.

What do I learn?
Located in Bicester in the heart of Motorsport Valley®, the Performance Engineering Centre is a purpose-built facility giving students and apprentices a unique experience with its first-class, state of the art workshops and facilities.

Activate Apprenticeships apprentices have progressed through the engineering and motorsport industry. Many are currently working and travelling the world with well-known racing teams, or occupying positions within the engineering industry.

The elements of the course are:
• EAL NVQ L2 units in Performing Engineering Operations
• EAL NVQ L3 Engineering
• Edexcel Technical certificate - BTEC Sub Diploma in Engineering
• Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT at Level 2
• Employment Rights and Responsibilities
• Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Following a discussion with you (the apprentice), the employer and the college, a pathway for the Level 3 is chosen to reflect the role of the apprentice within the company.

During the first year you will normally undertake the EAL NVQ units in Performing Engineering Operations (PEO), Functional Skills and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills within the college environment (this timetable can vary according to the employer's needs).

During the second and third year, you will normally complete:

• Edexcel Technical Certificate – BTEC Sub Diploma in Engineering
• Employment Rights and Responsibilities
• EAL NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma

Assignments give you the opportunity to prepare written work based on your own observations (e.g. describe health and safety procedures). Additional assessment may be carried out by tutor observation and/or witness statements. Assessment of this course will be taught mainly within the context of motorsport and engineering.
What do I gain?
You gain knowledge of motorsports industry processes, develop your personal skills and build your self-confidence.
What do I need?
You need GCSE Maths and English A–C grades or equivalents together with suitable employment within the industry.

If you have been working in the industry for a considerable time, and you and your employer consider that you may be able to enter directly at advanced level, this may be possible.

However, you will be invited to complete an initial assessment of your maths and English skills, and to have an interview to assess your motivation and commitment. We will discuss with your employer the training they will be providing in the workplace which will be needed to ensure that you are able to complete this programme.

There are no other restrictions to becoming an apprentice except that you need to be over the age of 16 and to have been settled in the UK for at least the past three years.
What can I do next?
Upon successful completion, you can consider progressing to the Foundation Degree in Motorsport, or undertake further short courses to enhance your skills in specialist areas.
