Celebrating our Beacon Award wins

This month we hosted two events to celebrate our recent AoC Beacon Award wins.

On Thursday 9 March, employers, staff and sector representatives joined us in Oxford to celebrate our award for practical teaching and learning. The award, which recognised how our Learning Philosophy had driven new employer partnerships and new, project-based learning approaches, was sponsored by The Edge Foundation.

Presenting the award, Jane Samuels, Head of Projects and Partnerships at The Edge Foundation, said: “When we visited the college during the assessment process, we were struck by how well embedded the Learning Philosophy was. You would struggle to find an area of the college which wasn’t characterised by strong employer partnerships and project-based learning. I hope that this award win will help the group to share what it is doing more widely across the sector.

On Friday 17 March, around 30 guests including previous Beacon Award winners, joined us in Reading to celebrate our second award win, for use of technology in teaching and learning. The event, sponsored by Jisc, included a Community of Practice which brought together those working in technology in further education colleges across the country.

Presenting the award, Paul McKean, Head of FE and Skills at Jisc, said: “Personally, as a Beacon Award assessor, it was my pleasure to see first-hand how this project has impacted on learners and staff alike. The main thing that struck me and my fellow assessors was the organisational culture here, one of respect and responsibility, supported by the college’s unique Learning Philosophy. The culture engenders innovation, trust and sharing and this is epitomised by the open classroom policy and supported by the Pass it On platform - something incidentally I am keen to extend beyond Activate Learning.”
